Safety for all

Refugees are in danger because of Canada’s cruel and unlawful decision to close the Canada-US border to people seeking refugee protection. This move violates international law, is out of step with public health measures that can only work when they protect everyone, and puts refugee claimants at risk of persecution, torture or worse. Those who are denied entry could be detained by American authorities in extremely harsh conditions or sent back to countries where their lives are in peril.

Canada can uphold its international legal obligations and protect public safety through quarantines and testing – the same measures that are in place for other essential cross-border travel.

In times of crisis, it’s more vital than ever to safeguard our basic human rights. None of us are safe until all of us are safe. In the midst of COVID-19 and in its eventual aftermath, help us protect human rights. Act today.

"Human rights are our best guide through this crisis and must be embraced in its aftermath."  -Alex Neve, Secretary General of Amnesty International Canada

Protect Human Rights

Genuine safety in the midst of a public health emergency like this pandemic must absolutely mean safety for all. It means keeping borders open to refugees, particularly in times of crisis. It means providing the articulated needs of Indigenous communities already facing systemic human rights abuses. And it means implementing robust human rights measures to protect everyone. Finally, we must keep frontline workers safe while they keep us safe. It means listening to and being led by the people most affected and coming together to protect and take care of each other.

Putting human rights at the heart of Canada’s COVID-19 response is the only way to ensure no one is left behind and to chart a path toward a world where everyone lives with dignity and safety. Fight for a Canada and a world where we’re all safe.

Act Now

Protect marginalized and vulnerable people in the COVID-19 response.

Lives at Risk

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us the best of humanity. Families and neighbours are taking care of each other in wonderful ways. People are coming together while staying home. Businesses are retooling their machinery to produce PPE. While we gather for nightly sessions to express appreciation for frontline workers from our front porches and balconies across the nation, it’s important to also remember that essential workers have no choice but to continue to put themselves in harm's way. For far too many people in our communities across the country, this crisis is about life and death:

Indigenous communities

Indigenous communities are even more vulnerable to the impact of COVID-19 because of the long-standing legacy and ongoing human rights violations of sovereignty, housing and infrastructure, a lack of access to healthcare, safe water and other essential services.

Women

Women form the bulk of essential workers, balancing their critical work with increased caregiving responsibilities and few options for childcare.

Refugees

With national borders closed—and already facing increased hardship and danger around the world—refugees are at risk of further persecution and human rights violations.

We are all safe

When

everyone is safe.

Act now.
