Freedom of expression is a human right.

Tujan al-Bukhaiti is a 17-year-old Yemeni refugee living in Jordan. She's been tried over charges of "blasphemy" and "insulting religious feelings" for posting her opinions on social media. 

On December 19th, 2019, the Juvenile Police called Tujan in for questioning after a report by the Jordanian Cybercrime Unit. The police then took her statement without the presence of her parents or a lawyer-- a violation of her right to a fair trial. The officer in charge opened her Facebook page while she was being interrogated and made insulting comments about her family. 

Tujan's trial began on January 16th, 2020 and there have been three sessions adjourned so far, causing her to miss three days of school needlessly. The charges against her are a violation of her constitutional right to freedom of expression and a contradiction of the country's obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political rights. 

If Tujan is convicted she could face one month in prison.
