PROTECT DEFENDERS OF INDIGENOUS RIGHTS IN HONDURAS
Berta Cáceres, an internationally-recognized defender of indigenous rights and the environment, was shot dead by gunmen who entered her home in Intibucá, Honduras on March 2, 2016.
Berta and her organization, the Civic Council of Indigenous and Popular Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), were courageously campaigning against the construction of a hydroelectric dam project called Agua Zarca and its impacts on the rights of Lenca Indigenous people.
Berta had repeatedly denounced aggression and death threats against her. They had increased as she campaigned against the Agua Zarca project.
