PROTECT DEFENDERS OF INDIGENOUS RIGHTS IN HONDURAS

Berta Cáceres, an internationally-recognized defender of indigenous rights and the environment, was shot dead by gunmen who entered her home in Intibucá, Honduras on March 2, 2016.

Berta and her organization, the Civic Council of Indigenous and Popular Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), were courageously campaigning against the construction of a hydroelectric dam project called Agua Zarca and its impacts on the rights of Lenca Indigenous people.

Berta had repeatedly denounced aggression and death threats against her. They had increased as she campaigned against the Agua Zarca project.

“THEY FOLLOW ME.
THEY THREATEN TO KILL ME AND KIDNAP MY FAMILY.
THIS IS WHAT WE FACE.”
- Berta Cáceres, killed on March 2, 2016

It is imperative that all those responsible for the murder of Berta are brought to justice, including the masterminds. Lack of justice is a green light for more killings in a country that is one of the most dangerous in the world to defend land, indigenous rights and the environment.

Will you raise your voice with Berta’s family and fellow human rights defenders in this time of such danger? Help us tell Honduras the world is watching and demand Justice for Berta!
