Campaign

Canadian Robert Schellenberg is facing execution in China. He was sentenced to death after he was convicted of drug trafficking at his re-trial.

We must call on authorities to stop this execution.

Amnesty International believes that the death penalty is a violation of the right to life and the right to be free from cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. We oppose its use in all circumstances, without exception. We have been advocating for its abolishment for more than 40 years, and every year more and more countries join the more than 100 countries who have ended its use.  China remains a glaring exception to this trend, and continues to be the world’s top executioner.

Please contact the Procurator General immediately, urging him to stop seeking the death penalty for this case

.

Quick facts:

  • Schellenberg was first tried in 2016 and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in 2018
  • His retrial lasted one day and appeared to be an unfair proceeding
  • Capital punishment is extensively used in China for non-violent crimes
