Convicted for Protecting the Environment

Demand that the five detained activists are immediately released and all convictions against Mother Nature Cambodia activists are quashed.

Six young Cambodian environmental activists—Chandaravuth Ly, Keoraksmey Phuon, Kunthea Long, Leanghy Yim, Ratha Sun, and Ratha Thun—formed Mother Nature Cambodia to protect the country’s environment. They helped stop a destructive hydroelectric dam in 2015 and secured a 2016 ban on sand exports, inspiring youth nationwide.

Their activism has brought government reprisals, including repeated arrests. In 2020 and 2021, members were jailed for peaceful protests and pollution investigations. In June 2024, five activists were sentenced to 6–8 years in prison, while Ratha Sun fled the country. Supporters are calling for their immediate release and the quashing of all convictions.

The Guerreras por la Amazonía are Ecuadorian activists aged 10–20 fighting to end toxic gas flares from oil extraction. Despite winning a 2021 court order to eliminate flares, they still burn. The young defenders face threats and intimidation, while authorities offer protection only if they stop their activism. Supporters urge Ecuador to end gas flaring and safeguard these climate defenders.

Defender of Rivers and Forests Murdered

Demand justice for Juan López.

Juan López was a beloved father, husband, and community spiritual leader in northern Honduras. Since 2015, he worked to protect rivers, forests, and the Carlos Escaleras Mejía National Park from harmful mining and energy projects, co-founding the Tocoa Municipal Committee to challenge them peacefully.

Despite facing harassment, threats, and criminalization, Juan persisted until 14 September 2024, when he was shot dead after leaving church. While the suspected gunman and two accomplices are detained, those who ordered the murder remain unpunished. Supporters demand full justice for Juan López.

Woman Journalist Jailed for Exposing Alleged Corruption

Call on Kyrgyzstan to ensure the immediate release of Makhabat and to review her criminal case now.

Makhabat Tazhibek kyzy, a leading investigative journalist in Kyrgyzstan, exposed high-level corruption and social injustices, giving voice to marginalized people. As authorities cracked down on independent media, she received threats of imprisonment and torture. In January 2024, she was arrested on baseless charges and in October 2024 sentenced to six years in prison. Her young son is now growing up without her. Supporters call for her immediate release and a review of her case.

Madagascar

Displaced by Droughts and Facing Starvation

Demand that the government takes urgent steps to address the hunger, homelessness, poor healthcare and other hardships faced by people across Madagascar.

In 2021, Damisoa’s family fled drought-stricken southern Madagascar after climate change–driven famine made survival impossible. After a 1,500 km journey, they reached a resettlement site in Boeny, where residents live in tiny huts, face flooding and crocodile threats, and lack food, clean water, and healthcare. In early 2025, Damisoa’s newborn niece died from hunger and thirst. Despite his pleas as site manager, government aid remains focused on the south, leaving displaced families in crisis. Urgent action is needed to protect their rights and provide humanitarian assistance.

Sai Zaw Thaike

Locked up and Beaten for his Journalism

Demand that Myanmar’s military immediately release Sai Zaw Thaike.

Journalism in Myanmar is deadly, with over 200 journalists jailed and at least seven killed since the 2021 military takeover. Despite the risks, photojournalist Sai Zaw Thaike reported undercover on Cyclone Mocha’s devastation in May 2023. Arrested after a week, he was beaten, interrogated, and sentenced to 20 years of hard labour in a one-day trial. He remains imprisoned, enduring abuse and solitary confinement. Supporters demand his immediate release.

Fighting to Protect their Ancestral Lands and Culture

Call on Norway to listen to Ellinor and the Sámi People, and help them protect their land, livelihoods and culture.

Ellinor Guttorm Utsi, an Indigenous Sámi leader in northern Norway, is fighting to protect her community’s reindeer-herding traditions and ancestral grazing lands in Čorgaš. In 2023, plans for hundreds of wind turbines threatened to fragment the land, disrupt reindeer migration, and endanger Sámi culture. Despite growing opposition, authorities are fast-tracking approvals, and Ellinor urges Norway to respect Sámi rights and protect their land, livelihoods, and culture.

Lost His Life Where He Should Have Been Safe

Demand Justice for the Death of Unecebo Mboteni

Three-year-old Unecebo Mboteni died on 18 April 2024 after falling into a pit toilet at his preschool in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Despite similar child deaths since 2018, unsafe pit toilets remain in schools, reflecting deep inequalities in education and infrastructure. A year later, Unecebo’s family has received no answers or accountability from authorities. Supporters demand justice for Unecebo and the urgent eradication of pit toilets in all schools.

Demand the Immediate Release of Human Rights Defender Sonia Dahmani

Sonia Dahmani, a Tunisian lawyer and outspoken human rights defender, was violently arrested on 11 May 2024 after criticizing racism and prison conditions on air. Convicted of “spreading false news” and facing further politically motivated charges, she is held in rat-infested, inhumane conditions and denied needed medical care. Her imprisonment is a clear attempt to silence dissent. Supporters demand her immediate release.
