Canada's New Border Bills Threaten the Human Right to Seek Asylum. Urge the Government to Withdraw Bills C-2 & C-12.
Every person has the right to seek safety. But two bills before Parliament—Bill C-2 and C-12—threaten that right and could endanger people who are simply looking for a safe place to live.
If passed, these bills would:
-
Prevent people who first entered Canada more than one year ago from making a claim for refugee protection that will be fairly assessed—even if it’s not safe for them to return home (Bills C-2 and C-12).
-
Make it even harder for people crossing from the U.S. to have their refugee claims heard by the Immigration and Refugee Board (Bills C-2 and C-12).
-
Give sweeping powers to federal ministers to cancel valid immigration documents—like permanent residence visas and work or study permits—without due process or individualized assessments (Bills C-2 and C-12).
-
Expand police and intelligence agencies' access to people’s private information, regardless of immigration status (Bill C-2).
These changes risk violating people’s rights under international law. They go against Canada’s values of fairness, compassion, and justice.
At a time when millions of people around the world are forced to flee violence, persecution, and disaster, Canada must not turn its back on those seeking refuge.
