Canada's New Border Bill Threatens the Human Right to Seek Asylum. Urge the Government to Withdraw Bill C-2.

Every person has the right to seek safety. But a new bill before Parliament—Bill C-2, misleadingly called the “Strong Borders Act”—threatens that right and could endanger people who are simply looking for a safe place to live.

If passed, this bill would:

  • Prevent people who have entered Canada more than one year ago from making a claim for refugee protection that will be fairly assessed—even if it’s not safe for them to return home.

  • Make it even harder for people crossing from the U.S. to have their refugee claims heard by the Immigration and Refugee Board.

  • Give sweeping powers to federal ministers to cancel valid immigration documents—like permanent residency, work permits, or study permits—based only on vague claims of “public interest.

  • Expand police and intelligence agencies' access to people’s private information, regardless of immigration status.

These changes risk violating people’s rights under international law. They go against Canada’s values of fairness, compassion, and justice.

At a time when millions of people around the world are forced to flee violence, persecution, and disaster, Canada must not turn its back on those seeking refuge.

Giving politicians sweeping powers over immigration decisions in Bill C-2 means people's futures will be decided through arbitrary decision making and political discretion. That's not justiceit is unfair and a lack of due process.

Seeking asylum is a human right, not a crime. Together, we must stand up for compassion, due process, and the right to safety.

TAKE ACTION NOW: Join us in urging the Government of Canada to withdraw Bill C-2 and defend people’s right to seek protection and safety.
