Sonia Dahmani's arrest is unjust and she must be released
On May 11,2024, masked security forces in civilian clothing stormed the Bar Association offices in Tunis. Their target: Sonia Dahmani, a well-known lawyer and media personality. Just two days later, an investigative judge ordered her detention for comments she made on a TV show, accusing her of spreading false information under the harsh Decree-Law 54. This law threatens five years in prison and a hefty fine.
Sonia Dahmani is no stranger to controversy. Known for her outspoken views, she regularly appears on popular shows like "Emission Impossible" and "Denya Zida." She’s already under investigation for other public comments critical of the authorities. In November, she faced a complaint for discussing prison conditions on a radio show, and in January, another complaint came from the Minister of Justice. Following her arrest, two journalists from the same radio show were also detained, showing the broad crackdown on free expression.

In response, the National Order of Lawyers (ONAT) launched a strike on May 13, condemning Dahmani’s arrest. The international community, including France and the European Union, voiced their concerns over these attacks on civil society and the press.
Since Decree-Law 54's enactment in September 2022, Tunisia has seen a sharp rise in the persecution of individuals for expressing critical views, with many facing severe penalties under this repressive law.
Dahmani’s case highlights a troubling trend in Tunisia. Despite her lawyers' pleas, her detention continues. She was even summoned again on May 28, without her legal team’s knowledge, showing the persistent efforts to silence her. Her story is a stark reminder of the ongoing battle for free expression and human rights in Tunisia.
